24/06/2022 Arran Whisky Festival 2022 (Day 1) The White Stag Dinner

The crossing is not very pleasant: the ship is crowded, and some other passengers are very inebriated (to the point of crashing against the toilet mirror every time they go).

Once in Brodick, we drive straight to Lagg via the sporty Ross; quite a challenge, with a car I have been driving for a whole hour prior. Fortunately, the road is deserted. Clearly, we have had no chance to dress up for this gala thing we are going to, since we are five hours late (our ferry was cancelled). It is a bit of a contrast to enter the venue where many men are in white dinner jackets.

Classy building too

Incredibly, they kept dinner for us. We have been texting for hours to confirm our whereabouts, but still, I am impressed. It is not very warm when we finally get to it, but, at least, we do not have to listen to all the speeches and such before diving in and trying the whiskies. In fact, we expedite supper in twenty minutes. With all the hoopla, I fail to note the names of what we eat.

Some kind of salmon salad

This is beef, with haggis bites

Looks like a pavlova of some sort

To accompany the food, we try the following:

Lagg 3yo 2019/2022 (unknown ABV, cask sample)
:

Comment: the unbottled first single malt from Lagg. It is OK, if young (no shit Sherlock!) 6/10

Lochranza 10yo Machrie Moor 1st Edition (46%, OB, b.2022): the previous expressions were all NAS offerings. This is the first with an age statement.

Comment: a great nose for a mediocre mouth and a hardly-better finish. 5/10

Then, we have a dram of...

Robert Burns (40%, Isle of Arran Distillers): a blend that a Belgian from Antwerp just won in the raffle ("Because of Brexit, I cannot take this [1.75-litre bottle] back to the Continent. Might as well share it.")

Comment: honestly, it is meh and a half, but the attention is much appreciated. All the same, none of us finish it. 4/10

We hang about with MR for a bit before driving to our accommodation in Corrie for the night (Cromla Cottage). Very tired.
