27/05/2019 One dram in Tobermory

I do have something specifically for this location, but no will to open it today. We will go for something with a not-too-dissimilar name. Also, I discovered today that there is a Tormore Pier at Fionnphort, at the other end of Mull. Tormore it is, then. The one I have been pouring in Campbeltown.

Tormore 30yo 1988/2019 (47.9%, Cadenhead Small Batch, 3 x Bourbon Hogsheads, 462b, 19/27): funny Cadenhead presented this 30yo as distilled in 1998 and bottled in 2019. They issued replacement stickers shortly thereafter that read 1988 for the distillation date; if you own one, I imagine the misprint is more limited, and therefore, desirable. Nose: shy, subtle and delicate, it emits wafts of white bread, herbs (verbena, marjoram) and lichen on lime stone. The nose is so shy I am tempted to think the bottle needs to be finished in the next hours! Liquorice allsorts, bergamot leaves, Kaffir lime leaves, lime foliage alongside stale tobacco. Give it enough time and it becomes more expressive, this one. Mouth: it has lost none of its vibrance on the palate. Here, it is pomelo and faint grapefruit (stewed), crystallised pineapple cubes, a pinch of pepper, and some herbs, rubbed onto the lot. RG observed the other day that this is completely cask-driven; he may be right, but when the result is so good, who cares? Finish: a lot of fruit, citrus, mostly, with pomelo, lime, pineapple, bergamot, yet also slightly-bitter leaves (bay leaves), courgette flowers, woody yoghurt and sawdust-based pulp. It leaves a creamy mouthfeel, with a soft bitterness that lingers. This has an ideal balance of fruit and bitter leaves. An excellent dram. I wonder how many passed it in Campbeltown, despite my recommendation... 9/10 (Thanks for the sample, SW)
